Bit Colour Coding

Bombers users a system of colour coded mouthpieces to help you select the right bit for your horse.  Each category gives the symptoms that horses display and the mouthpieces that have been designed to deal with with those symptoms.  The most common mouthpieces in each category are highlighted and underlined. To explore the options available to you more fully please refer to the Bits by Colour Code section of the online catalogue.  In each category are the mouthpieces that are designed to deal with that symptom and then one can further narrow your search by selecting which discipline you are riding in, which will give you the cheekpieces options for the mouthpiece and discipline selected.

When pressure is applied to a horse with a sensitive tongue, its response will be one or more of the following:

  • Shaking its head
  • Sticking its tongue out
  • Sucking its tongue back and as a result making an intermittent coughing noise
  • Trying to put its tongue over the bit
A neutral bit is suitable for a horse that holds its head in the correct position when pressure is applied and shows no signs of having a sensitive tongue or objecting to the pressure.
If a horse objects to pinching of the tongue and bar pressure it will poke its nose up and out. These bits will reduce the pressure on the tongue and bars and as a result the horse will bring its head down and in.

When pressure is applied to a horse that objects to continuous pressure, it will exibit one or more of the following traits:

  • It pulls its head down
  • It tries to pull the reins out of the riders hands
  • It tucks its head against its chest and gets "behind" the bit
Specialised bits that have been designed to sort out a range of less common problems.
