Width & Thickness

A Bridoon is a single or double jointed bit designed to be used on a double bridle with a Weymouth. The Bridoon sits above the Weymouth in the horse's mouth. It regulates lateral flexion, as the branches work independently.

The Eggbutt Bridoon's rings are 68 mm and are smaller than a standard Eggbutt's rings, so that the rings do not interfere with the Weymouth. The Eggbutt cheekpiece prevents pinching of the lips and gives a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face. It also prevents the bit being pulled through the mouth. The release is slower than the Loose Ring Bridoon and also introduces some poll pressure.

The Elliptical is a double jointed bit, with a lozenge in the middle.

The Elliptical link in the centre is 38mm which is slightly smaller than the standard Elliptical link. This takes some of the pressure off the tongue and places it on the bars encouraging the horse to lift his head, while the lozenge encourages the horse to come towards the vertical.

Notes:
1 The measured width of a horse's mouth (from corner to corner with no wrinkles) rounded up to the nearest 5mm. These are typical values for the breed. MMS = Measured Mouth Size. Click here for more information on measuring your horse's mouth
2 Factors to be added to the measured width of a horse's mouth to ensure the bit width is calculated correctly. This varies depending on the mouthpiece and cheekpiece of the bit. Fixed cheek pieces do not require any additional width to be added to the measured width of the horse's mouth. For Barrel or Lock Up mouthpieces only add 5 mm as these mechanisms limit the nut cracker action.
3 The width of the bit for a optimal fit, taking into account its components and the width of the horse's mouth. If calculating a bit width based upon a previously purchased Bomber bit, please make sure all relevant adjustments for differences in cheek and mouth pieces are adhered too.
4 Measurements in inches are approximate.
