Matamo Northern Natal Champs - May 2009
Northern Natal championships 2009 was held at Matamo club in Estcourt Kwazulu-Natal, this quiet little town along the N3 from Durban to Joburg has been the host to many great test matches as well as some fantastic local derbys in the past.
Based along the river, you can spot the feilds as you drive down the hill into the town and along with the golf course and bridges it provides a pleasant greeting on a sunny day. Saturday morning was set to start at 9 am which it did thankfully even though with the cloud cover and nippy winds one couldnt blame anyone for wanting to stay inside, thankfully by midday it had cleared a bit or at least warmed up and we could all appreciate the fine turnout we had had to contest the title of northern natal champions, there were alot of the junior touring sides put together to try out combinations for the upcoming junior tours from America and to Zambia with their teams being slotted into the various divisions and providing some entertaining polcrosse and an enlightening glimpse into the future of our polocrosse.
With the unfortunate rugby result on the saturday night ...... sunday morning started early with 8:30 games. The weather turned out beautifully with clear skies and warm temperatures we could all look forward to some good finals. The Nyathi A side played the U23\u19 boys for the title and saw Nyathi take the silverware in a well deserved win in the final, whilst the Matamo A side managed to overcome the Rovers side to win the B division, the C division was won by the Bethel and the D division by Bethel
We have to say well done to the tournament organisers for putting together a spread that reminded us of Matamo in all its spleandour of the old days and for ensuring the tournament ran in a timely manner with few hiccups... thankyou to all those who helped put it together and well done .....
