fighting the bit

I have a mule that will put his head down pushing into the bit. Open his mouth put his tongue over the bit and out the side of his mouth. I am using a old style single break O ring snaffle. What kind of bit should I try on him? I tried going with a bitless bridle and he did not respond to that at all.

Hi Kari,

Thank you for your question!

Your mule is showing signs of being tongue sensitive. While the Snaffle doesn't use a lot of tongue pressure, it will create a small pressure point on the tongue. He is a very sensitive chap.

I recommend a Loose Ring Ported Barrel for him. This will remove the pressure from his tongue, which will stop him from wanting to put his tongue over the bit.
