Encourage the horse to lean

Title*:
Hi I own an ex racehorse that tucks behind the contact so I am looking for a bit that will encourage him to ‘lean’ on the contact until he becomes happy and confident there. I have been riding him in the loose ring happy tongue and he does eventually sit on it after about 20-25 minutes work. I’m just wondering if there are any other alternatives that would be better suited to him?

Hi Jenni,

Thank you for your question!

When the contact is taken up, the mouth piece will start to rotate, with a ported bit, this means that the port will eventually put some pressure on the tongue. This could be too much for your horse and what is making him duck behind the contact.

To soften the tongue pressure even more we allow the mouth piece to swivel. In the DC Morgan Happy Tongue Straight Swivel, the mouth piece and cheek piece work independently. This keeps the mouth piece very still in the mouth, completely eliminating tongue pressure. The pressure on the bars is also smoother because it is solely a backwards and forwards action.

I would recommend this bit for your horse, it removes the last bit of pressure that your horse is trying to escape from.
