Control in dressage - pony runs off

I have a pony who currently ridden in a gag (second ring) due to sudden bolting and running off with lack of control. He often feels that he is blocking your hand on the left rein causing it quite hard to maintain a bend especially distracted (we are schooling so that should hopefully improve).
We have a small one day event coming up and need a snaffle that is legal but I also feel I can have control if needed?
What would you recommend?

Hi Vicki,

Thank you for your question. What mouth piece is on the gag that you are using?

The mouth piece, more than the cheek piece determines where pressure is placed in the mouth. Some horses prefer pressure in one area while others prefer another area. Your current mouth piece will tell me more about the pressure your horse is willing to accept. This will help me to recommend a Dressage legal bit that will allow you to have plenty of control
