Bit advice for a sensitive mare

I have a mare that i am struggling to find a bit she is comfortable in. When she is working and stressed, she raises her head like a giraffe. She will tilt her head, jog on the spot with her head high then will try and snatch the reins. I have tried a bomber happy tongue, a NS turtle top (she hated that!), and a bomber eptical. She was previously ridden in a NS verbidend and a universal for jumping. My daughter sat on her the other day and picked up the reins and her head went high straight away with teh slightest of contacts. She is sensitive however when stressed becomes strong and fights. Any advice is welcome! she is a connemara. She also chomps on the bit quite extensively. I appreciate some of this will be schooling however i feel i haven't found a bit that she will accept yet.

Hi Beverley,

Have you had a physio or chiro look over your mare? I would particularly look at her jaw, as she is having an extreme reaction to very light pressure. If she is a bit of poor doer as well, that would be another sign that her jaw could use some work.

You have tried bits that create very different pressures, I would certainly expect her to show some improvement and or a different reaction to the very different pressure.

My first choice with her would be the Eggbutt Ultra Comfy Lock Up. The Ultra Comfy is double locked so that it cannot fold downwards or backwards, this means that it retains its shape in the horse’s mouth, and it eliminates any nut cracker action.  The mouth piece is also angled on the sides, so that it goes up and over the tongue, this greatly reduces tongue pressure, while not greatly increasing pressure on the bars.  Due to its’ shape, it will also fit the horse with a narrow bottom jaw without causing any discomfort.

The Ultra Comfy Lock Up doesn't concentrate pressure in any one area, your mare will be more comfortable with this.
