Low Palate, dead on left rein, grinding teeth

I have had my new horse for 2 weeks, he is a 4 year old TB gelding. His trainer told me he has a low palate.
I have tried him in a kk happy mouth, and a dropped French link and he doesn't seem happy in either. when applying pressure, he either grinds his teeth or pokes his head in the air. he is also very dead on the left rein. Any suggestions for me? he is not strong at all and very receptive to legs and voice.

Hi Philippa,

Have you had his neck, back and teeth checked? If not, I would suggest starting there.

It sounds like your horse is objecting to the bar pressure caused by jointed bits. Bar pressure will ask a horse to raise his head.

I suggest looking at the Barrel 20 mouth piece. This bit does not fold closed, therefore there is no squeezing of the bars, but because of the ball and socket joints, the branches are still able to act independently.

With a low palate, I would suggest riding him in a bit that is slightly thinner than the standard. I suggest a 12mm bit. It will be slightly sharper, but I think that it is worth the gains for him in comfort.

I would prefer to go with Loose Rings unless there is a need for poll pressure. The Loose Ring gives a very quick release of pressure, which helps a young horse to learn his new job.

Thanks Claire, his teeth have recently been done and his back is fine. I have ordered a 5.5", 12mm loose ring barrel 20. I will let you know how it goes :)
