Bit for a strong fast warmblood

Hello, I have a big warmblood who has a tendancy to curl behind the bit coming into a fence and on landing he roots down and out and shakes his head. I am looking for a bit that has enough muscle to bring him back to me after fences but will encourage him to balance coming into fences. So far he goes best in a gag type bit where I can check him and release quickly when needed but I have to try very hard to stay off of him into fences. Would be nice to have something that could work on both sides of the fence.

Hi Caron,

Curling behind the bit is a sign that the horse is finding that bit too strong for him. Horse's are animals of flight, and will run way from something they find uncomfortable. A stronger bit will not help, it will just encourage him to try harder to escape it.

We need to go very soft with him, as well as taking the pressure off his tongue. The rooting and head shaking are signs that he does not like pressure on his tongue.

My recommendation for your horse is a Williams Happy Tongue. The Happy Tongue mouth piece will take all the pressure off his tongue. The Williams cheek piece will provide you with poll pressure as well as leverage on the mouth piece.

Great, does this bit have enough stop to get a very strong horse checked back quickly while avoiding all the head tossing? - Caron Brown 2 years ago

Hi Caron,

The strength of the bit is not as important as placing the pressure on the structures he finds most comfortable. Removing the pressure from the areas that he finds uncomfortable and placing it where he is happy with it, will result in him listening better because he has no reason to resist.
