Bitting Advice for Starting Polo Pony

Hello - I am starting a very willing, calm 5 year old mare for polo. Gav Chaplin has suggested that I start with a snaffle - either the "Don McHardy Tongue Relief" or the "Bomber Blue Swivel". Although I'm fairly certain that I know which bit on your website is the Swivel, I'm not entirely sure which of your bits he is calling the Don McHardy Tongue Relief. Could you provide some guidance? Also, any additional bit suggestions that you have for starting horses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Hunter,

We cannot make the Bomber Blue Swivel in a Loose Ring, and I wouldn't suggest starting a young horse in a bit with poll pressure, as we try to keep it as light as possible to begin with.

We generally suggest either the Loose Ring Happy Tongue or the Loose Ring Bomber Blue for starting young horses, as both provide tongue relief, the tongue isn't scared in the process, this will help to keep the horse soft and sensitive.

I have attached a picture of the Loose Ring McHardy. The McHardy will also give some tongue relief, but it will ask the horse to extend his neck a bit, and bring his nose in. The roller does give some tongue pressure.
