Eventer and Bomber Bits ambassador Lucy Richards introduces her horses…

My top horse is currently 7-year-old Wicklow Into Orbit, aka Obie, who is by OBOS Quality, and currently competing at 3* level.

He was the youngest horse selected for the Junior European Development Squad for 2021, and is very talented in all three phases; though he has taken some time to come into it being 17.3hh! It is a great shame for him that British Eventing have decided not to take a team out to the Junior European Championships, as that was a major aim for him this year.

Now I look to establish him at 3* level, and take championship opportunities as they present themselves, in order to ready him for young rider selection next year. He currently ‘dressages’ in a Bombers loose ring ported barrel, which helps him hold himself in self carriage, and jumps in a Bombers happy tongue swales pelham, which I can make small adjustments in without having to pull him, which he doesn’t like!

Wicklow Into Orbit

  • Joined the team: July 2019
  • Likes: cross country work – particularly gym sessions, sleeping, cuddles – even better if he can sleep and be cuddled at the same time!
  • Dislikes: other horses getting more attention than him.
  • Quirks: Bronking and galloping down busy roads – there’s a reason he doesn’t hack anymore! Having a cheeky buck when he is feeling fresh or on the way down to the dressage warm up! Drinking from the tap.

Lucy and joeI also have my school master KEC Joel ( x KEC Maximum Joe), aka Joe, who took me round my first international aged 14, and got me selected for the Millstreet Development Trip run by BE in the same year. He had taken me round two national championships before I turned 16! Now at the age of 15, he enjoys a lighter time. I have just finished my A level exams, and am hoping to get him out competing at dressage, show jumping and maybe some eventing, but we will have to see. Joe is ridden in a Bombers loose ring ported barrel for all three phases, but I am looking forward to trying him in the D ring version.

Joined the team: October 2016

KEC Joel

  • Likes: cross country – particularly the water jump; food! – being admired but not touched; being spoilt rotten.
  • Dislikes: other horses getting food without him, his humans giving attention to other horses when they should be admiring him, his little brother Obie – he was enjoying being an only child until Obie came along and ruined it all!
  • Quirks: stealing sandwiches from the picnic and having a pit stop of hedge when hacking! Laughing when he plays a trick on you!
  • I am very lucky to have my yard at home with 12 boxes, and now I have finished my A levels, I am looking to strengthen and broaden my strip of horses by taking on new owned rides.
